It is used to denote social class and income
Roughly:
AB-C1C2-DE
Upper-Upper and Lower-Working
IE: Broadsheet and complex/foreign dramas are seen as appealing to ABC1s.
By contrast, Tabloid newspapers, sitcoms and film genres such as rom-coms are considered typical C2DE

higher up=more sophisticated and intellectually capable.
