Convergence - Gaga and Her Filmic Videos.

Ladu Gaga's Paparazzi is a very filmic video. The total length is 6 minutes but only half of that is taken up by the song, the rest is a strange combination of a film and a music video. With it's long diegetic intro, break and outro, the video is a perfect example of how videos are heading towards filmic tendencies.

The video runs into Gaga's telephone video, which is directed by the same director, Jonas Ã…kerlund, who is known for his filmic videos. The video for telephone is almost 3 times longer than the song is, with the song simply split up between the storyline. With the trilogy yet to end, The final video could be reaching 12 minutes long if the trend continues, completely classing the video as a short film.

I broke down the videos into their various sections. The first video featured is Paparazzi, with the non-music parts first, then the music. Next is Telephone, same order.

  1. Another nice e.g. of your accomplished 'use of technology', which is assessed and also is basis of 1 of the 4 Eval Qs (Q4)
Having said that, a screenshot or 2 is always a good idea, and would be useful here to maybe illustrate some of the points we discussed yesterday on what the media language which seems to denote 'filmic' actually is - e.g. panoramic shots, slo-mo. TV (+ by extension music vid?) is a medium-shot heavy format because of expectations of screen size; LS + ELS more appropriate for film, at least for theatrical exhibition.
You touch on another point here - either of you could blog on this - which should be made more explicit, in a sep post: many, many film directors have evolved from m vid origins; the m vid as director's 'calling card' to boost chances of being entrusted with a multi-million film production. No better examples than Corbijn + Gondry; if you haven't seen Corbijn's "Control" I think you'd enjoy it, altho your age might mitigate against that (readings...). Plus, of course, both WT and Warp emerged from music video production!
